Atlanta, GA — In observance of National Recovery Month, the Georgia Department of Community Supervision (DCS) takes this opportunity to spotlight the significance of dedicated counselors and their pivotal role in aiding individuals on their journey to recovery from mental health and substance use disorders. DCS acknowledges the profound impact of compassionate and skilled counseling in elevating the mental well-being of individuals under our care.

National Recovery Month, held annually in September, is a time to increase awareness and understanding of substance use and mental health disorders, as well as to celebrate the individuals who have made the courageous decision to seek help and embark on the path to recovery.

Micheal W. Nail, Commissioner of the Department of Community Supervision, underscores the importance of this month: "National Recovery Month is an occasion to applaud the resilience of individuals in recovery and recognize the commitment of counselors who support them. We take pride in acknowledging the invaluable contributions of our counselors, who are steadfast in their commitment to helping individuals achieve enduring recovery."

At the heart of DCS's commitment to recovery is the Recidivism Reduction Unit, where dedicated professionals like Dr. Alfreda Hammonds, a Rehabilitation Counselor make a tangible difference in the lives of countless individuals seeking redemption.

Dr. Alfreda Hammonds has been a cherished member of the DCS team for several years, sharing her expertise and compassion to guide those in need toward recovery. Dr. Hammonds reflects on her role with passion: "What I find most fulfilling about being a counselor at DCS is the opportunity to witness the profound transformations in people's lives. In my capacity, I ensure that individuals who visit our office receive the full spectrum of services available to them."

Sherri Bloodworth, Director of Recidivism Reduction for DCS, emphasizes the dedication and empathy of DCS counselors: “Our counselor's dedication and empathy are a testament to the transformative power of counseling in the journey toward recovery and reintegration. Their passion reflects the spirit of National Recovery Month, which we celebrate with a deep commitment to supporting individuals on their path to wellness. As we honor the exceptional work of our counselors, DCS remains resolute in its mission to promote recovery, foster positive change, and improve the mental well-being of our community during this National Recovery Month.”
