Timothy C. Ward was appointed by Governor Brian P. Kemp as the Commissioner for the Georgia Department of Corrections on February 18, 2019. As Commissioner, Ward manages a $1.3 billion budget and leads approximately 10,000 employees. The agency’s responsibility is to protect the public by supervising more than 50,000 state offenders through the operation of secure and safe facilities, while reducing recidivism through effective programming, education and healthcare. Ward began his career with the Department in 1992 at Scott State Prison (SP) as a Correctional Officer. He went on to serve in several capacities with the Department to include, Counselor at Hancock and Rivers SP, Chief Counselor at Scott SP, Superintendent at both Western Probation Detention Center (PDC) and McEver PDC, Warden at Rogers SP, Johnson SP and Phillips SP, Director of Facilities Operations as well as Assistant Commissioner of Facilities. Ward was appointed by Governor Nathan Deal to serve as Chief of Staff in December 2016. He was then appointed by Governor Brian P. Kemp to serve as Interim Commissioner in January 2019. Ward holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Savannah State University and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University. Other accomplishments include, Executive and Correctional Officer certifications from the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, and completion of the Executive Leadership Development Program from the Georgia Leadership Institute. Ward serves on the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council and is one of 28 Commissioners nationally on the American Correctional Association for the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections. Ward is an active member of the Southern States Correctional Association, the Georgia Professional Association of Community Supervision, the American Correctional Association and the Georgia Prison Warden’s Association. Ward and his wife have three children. He is a native of Dawson, Georgia and resides in Milledgeville, Georgia.
